X vs. N Bolt Connections

When using structural bolts most wonder what the difference between X and N connections are, how to use them and when each type should be used. Thankfully the answer to all those questions are simple to answer.

What’s the Difference in the Bolts?

That’s just it, there is no difference in the bolts used for X and N connections. The X and N terms are just simply used to classify the types of connections the bolts are used in. In fact, both X and N connections are load bearing where the bolt is being used in the shear zone.

So what is different between these two connections? The X connection is when the threads are EXCLUDED from the shear plane. While the N connection is when the threads are INCLUDED in the shear plane. The graphic below shows the difference between the two connections and their use, or lack, of threads in the shear plane.

Connections

As a friendly reminder, when choosing the correct fastener for the connection, it is necessary to look at the diameter and thread length required. This will help you decide upon which connection style is perfect for your next application.

How and When to Use These Bolts

Typically, the X and N connections are associated with structural bolts, which are used in steel to steel fastening applications such as scaffolding, I-beams and structural joints, as well as use in cell phone tower modifications.

Seen in heavy construction jobs, structural bolts are used with a nut and hardened washer to make ASTM specifications. The high-quality steel used to create these bolt heads are designed for strength and durability, allowing the head to distribute the load better.

In short, structural bolts’ name explains it all. These bolts are utilized to provide structural support fastening for an abundance of applications. If you require structural bolts, look no further, Allfasteners has a wide range of structural bolts with both X and N connections.
